Yashua Klos: Banners @ISE Cultural Foundation

During the mid-twentieth century, woodblock printing was, for many African American artists, an activist as well as artistic process. Printing multiples allowed for the work to be circulated outside of an exclusive art market. These artists believed that their work would best function where it was most useful - amongst the people. In this !Banners' series, the viewer's vantage point looks downward upon the subject, while the scale of the figures challenge any pedestrian interaction with the image. Portraiture, in this case, becomes an act of representation where the image itself operates as propaganda

CRAIG FINN & THE BASEBALL PROJECT - CBGB Festival @City Winery

CRAIG FINN (The Hold Steady) Playing songs from his debut solo album “Clear Heart Full Eyes”, which Craig describes as juxtaposed and influenced by Friday Night Lights, a TV show that excited and moved him and also happened in Texas, where he recorded this fine album. Craig says "'Clear Heart' signifies honesty and transparency, and 'Full Eyes' suggests experience. Thus, the album is about being optimistic and open without succumbing to the weariness or doubt that comes with age and experience." To him, that is what it's all about. THE BASEBALL PROJECT What happens when your band’s debut album is a run-scoring hit with both music and baseball fans? If you’re The Baseball Project, you grab some friends to fill out your bench, take batting practice by writing songs for ESPN and deliver a strikeout pitch with Volume Two: High and Inside. The new album from Steve Wynn, Scott McCaughey, Linda Pitmon and Mike Mills (R.E.M) is another winning collection of songs about the game’s greats that will be pleasing to those who love America’s pastime â€" and fans of intelligent, melodic and fun rock. Pepe Vives: New Paintings @Joy Wai Gallery

For over twenty years, Pepe Vives has worked primarily as a painter. Presently, he has devoted himself to pictorial transformation of printed imagery: photographs, newspapers, and magazines. Vives endows transitory and evanescent images with the auratic presence of an icon, freely playing off sacred connotations. “...I scarcely could discern the face that in halcyon days set my foolish heart aflutter...”

oncruises.com - IndepenDANCE Party Cruise @Paddle Wheel Queen

New York City is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Millions of postcards have been made donning the beautifully lit Manhattan skyline. But there's no better way to take in the awesome views than from the outside in, which is why every day yachts take off from the harbor for special event, but none quite like the Paddle Wheel Queen, a multi-level ship that transforms anyone's day into one of the most exciting and entertaining experience to come out of New York City. Summer is finally upon us in NYC, and if there's one day we look forward to the most it's the 4th of July. But this year, rather than sticking to the typical BBQ/park experience, why not hop aboard the Paddle Wheel Queen for a special event that's set to rock every party being hosted in the city on that day - the IndepenDANCE Party Cruise! While you may like to stick with the family on this day, this is a grown-ups only cruise, and the three-hours of open bar accompanied with a full dinner buffet is enough to convince anyone to leave the kids home that day. The live DJ will be serving up the best in Top 40, hip-hop, house, and dance. But if there's one characteristic that makes this event special, it's the vantage point that everyone aboard will have when it comes to the view. The popular fireworks will be in full force on 4th of July night, but no one's going to have a better view than the Paddle Wheel Queen. Coney Island To Host First-Ever International Calisthenics Federation Invitational On July 4 @Beach Bar Park

The International Calisthenics Federation, the governing body for the sport of Calisthenics, today released the field of competitors for its inaugural 4th of July Calisthenics Event, to be held live on the beach at New York’s iconic Coney Island. This first-ever competition will feature the fittest calisthenics athletes on the planet competing for cash awards in Freestyle and Muscle/Pull-up events. Starting at 3pm, the preliminary heats are free to the public and will take place at Beach Bar Park, directly across from The Boardwalk and Coney Island Aquarium. The final two competitors will then face off live at MCU Park in Coney Island at 5:30 p.m. prior to the Brooklyn Cyclones-Williamsport Crosscutters game that night. Sixteen elite athletes will enter with the chance to be named the first-ever ICF Freestyle or Man-Up Champion. Calisthenics is a new, but rapidly growing, sport that developed organically in public parks and playgrounds across the U.S. and overseas. Using only readily available equipment, Calisthenics tests athletes’ strength, endurance, overall body fitness and creativity with moves such as “muscle-ups,” “levers,” “typewriters,” and many more... The International Calisthenics Federation was established to further the development of this grass-roots phenomenon and support its responsible growth into a global sport. “We are very excited to have our first event on the beach in Coney Island on the 4th of July,” said Jimbeau Andrews, an ICF Executive Director. “While thousands will flock to Coney Island to watch massive hot dog consumption, we will be celebrating healthy living with some amazing, personable athletes in a one-of-a-kind spectator event that anyone can relate to. It will be a great deal of fun, and there is no better time to celebrate healthy living than Brooklyn on Independence Day.” Hosted by Asian X Games host Paul Higgins and accomplished Calisthenics athlete Beast of Team BeastMode, this event will push, and pull, the limits to the edge. Elite Calisthenics Athletes Invited to Compete at Coney Island July 4th Include: Gavin ‘ABS’ Mcbean, Ronnel ‘Juice’ Joseph, Brian ‘B-Rock’ Delacruz, Akeem ‘Soul’ Scott, James ‘Jedi’ Jackson, David ‘D-Real’ Boutros, Johnathon ‘Powerhouse’ Concepcion, Joe ‘GI Joe’ Luis, and others representing teams such as: The BarStarzz, BeastMode, the Calisthenics Kings and Team Wingate. Athletes will compete on a variety of different calisthenics apparatus in a 1-hour Jam format heat where they will be judged on degree of difficulty, amplitude and originality. The Champion will be crowned by a vote of their peers to determine which challenger impressed them the most with his endurance, innovation and strength. The Man-Up event challenges each athlete to complete as many pull-ups (1-point) and muscle-ups (3 points) as possible in 2-minutes. A successful pull-up requires athletes to lock their arms at the bottom and ensure their chin clears the bar at the top without moving their lower body before initiating each pull-up. A valid muscle up requires athletes to lock their arms while hanging from the bar; lift themselves up and over the bar and then lock their arms again at the top. Only muscle-ups that are completed without erratic leg movements or benefit of swinging momentum will be considered correct and awarded points by a referee. The final two Man-Up athletes will compete on the infield of the MCU Brooklyn Cyclone’s Stadium in front of a sold out crowd. In addition, all athletes will perform an exciting Freestyle Calisthenics demonstration that is sure to thrill the 8000 Brooklyn Cyclone fans in attendance. ABOUT THE ICF: The International Calisthenics Federation (ICF) was founded in 2012 as a 501 c3 not-for-profit organization with the charter to support the responsible growth and development of the sport of Calisthenics through dissemination of safety, technical and training information and products; as well as through competition and education. The 2012 ICF Calisthenics Champions Tour will visit cities throughout the second half of 2012, showing off the skills of its athletes and promoting healthy lifestyle activities to individuals through exercise, nutrition, fitness and fair play. SOVEREIGN @The Secret Theater

Picking up several years after the events of 'Blast Radius,' Mac Rogers' 'SOVEREIGN' concludes the story of a sister and a brother at mortal odds in a radically changed Earth.

Elizabeth McAlpine: the Map of Exactitude @Laurel Gitlen (Small A Projects)

Laurel Gitlen presents the first US solo exhibition by the British artist Elizabeth McAlpine. Employing cinema and photography to articulate and complicate the textures and constructs of time, architecture, and space, McAlpine's minimal compositions depict these structures as much as they are built from their components.

Dan Flavin: Drawing @The Morgan Library and Museum

Best known for his fluorescent light installations, Dan Flavin was also an avid draftsman. This first retrospective of his drawings will include over one hundred sheets representing every phase of his career: early abstract expressionist watercolors of the 1950s, studies for light installations, portraits and landscape sketches, and pastels of sailboats from the 1980s. In addition, the exhibition will feature nearly fifty works from Flavin's personal collection of drawings, including nineteenth-century American landscapes by Hudson River School artists, Japanese drawings, and twentieth-century works by artists such as Piet Mondrian, Donald Judd, and Sol LeWitt.

Urban Archives: Pictures of the Bronx by Emilio Sanchez @Bronx Museum of the Arts

This exhibition will present a group of fourteen paintings and twelve works on paper by Cuban-born artist Emilio Sanchez, that were recently donated to the Bronx Museum Permanent Collection. Sanchez's works depict commercial buildings in the Hunts Point area of the South Bronx. With their colorful palette and rigorous architectural design, these works depict the bodegas and auto shops of the Bronx in an almost idyllic style that make a stark contrast with preconceived views of the borough. The exhibition is also accompanied by a display of related archival material and a resource guide for educators

Tacita Dean: Five Americans @New Museum of Contemporary Art

The New Museum presents an exhibition of works by British artist Tacita Dean. The presentation focuses on a group of recent pieces that capture five important American artists and thinkers of the last fifty years, and features Merce Cunningham, Leo Steinberg, Julie Mehretu, Claes Oldenburg and Cy Twombly. These works are beautifully crafted portraits of each individual, opening a lens onto their artistic processes and personal memories. This installation, organized in close collaboration with Dean, provides insight into the way in which her filmmaking intersects with painting, sculpture, writing, and dance.

Klara Liden: Bodies of Society @New Museum of Contemporary Art

The New Museum will present the first large-scale, American museum exhibition of the artist Klara Liden, featuring a selection of works in the Museum's second floor gallery. In her practice, Liden regularly mines the anxieties of urban space to create ingenious and psychologically charged installations. She scavenges the streets of cities around the world for discarded materials, which she uses to build sculptural hideaways, scaled to her own body, in unexpected places. For her show at the New Museum, Liden will create a progression of spaces that culminate in a site-specific work intervening in the museum's architecture and creating a place physically and psychologically apart. This exhibition will also feature a number of Liden's videos realized over the past decade.

Stanya Kahn @New Museum of Contemporary Art

Stanya Kahn's videos "offer glimpses into alternate worlds populated by bizarre characters, mummified animals, natural forces, and primal impulses." 'Happy Song for You' (2011), made with artist Llyn Foulkes, demonstrates Kahn's unique approach to storytelling, in which humor and absurdity function as central forces. Featuring an original song written and performed by Foulkes, the video is set to a carefully crafted soundtrack, a signature element of Kahn's work. 'Happy Song for You' will be exhibited alongside a selection of ink-on-paper drawings that extend Kahn's comedic writing into the graphic practice of cartooning.
