Coney Island To Host First-Ever International Calisthenics Federation Invitational On July 4 @Beach Bar Park

The International Calisthenics Federation, the governing body for the sport of Calisthenics, today released the field of competitors for its inaugural 4th of July Calisthenics Event, to be held live on the beach at New York’s iconic Coney Island. This first-ever competition will feature the fittest calisthenics athletes on the planet competing for cash awards in Freestyle and Muscle/Pull-up events. Starting at 3pm, the preliminary heats are free to the public and will take place at Beach Bar Park, directly across from The Boardwalk and Coney Island Aquarium. The final two competitors will then face off live at MCU Park in Coney Island at 5:30 p.m. prior to the Brooklyn Cyclones-Williamsport Crosscutters game that night. Sixteen elite athletes will enter with the chance to be named the first-ever ICF Freestyle or Man-Up Champion. Calisthenics is a new, but rapidly growing, sport that developed organically in public parks and playgrounds across the U.S. and overseas. Using only readily available equipment, Calisthenics tests athletes’ strength, endurance, overall body fitness and creativity with moves such as “muscle-ups,” “levers,” “typewriters,” and many more... The International Calisthenics Federation was established to further the development of this grass-roots phenomenon and support its responsible growth into a global sport. “We are very excited to have our first event on the beach in Coney Island on the 4th of July,” said Jimbeau Andrews, an ICF Executive Director. “While thousands will flock to Coney Island to watch massive hot dog consumption, we will be celebrating healthy living with some amazing, personable athletes in a one-of-a-kind spectator event that anyone can relate to. It will be a great deal of fun, and there is no better time to celebrate healthy living than Brooklyn on Independence Day.” Hosted by Asian X Games host Paul Higgins and accomplished Calisthenics athlete Beast of Team BeastMode, this event will push, and pull, the limits to the edge. Elite Calisthenics Athletes Invited to Compete at Coney Island July 4th Include: Gavin ‘ABS’ Mcbean, Ronnel ‘Juice’ Joseph, Brian ‘B-Rock’ Delacruz, Akeem ‘Soul’ Scott, James ‘Jedi’ Jackson, David ‘D-Real’ Boutros, Johnathon ‘Powerhouse’ Concepcion, Joe ‘GI Joe’ Luis, and others representing teams such as: The BarStarzz, BeastMode, the Calisthenics Kings and Team Wingate. Athletes will compete on a variety of different calisthenics apparatus in a 1-hour Jam format heat where they will be judged on degree of difficulty, amplitude and originality. The Champion will be crowned by a vote of their peers to determine which challenger impressed them the most with his endurance, innovation and strength. The Man-Up event challenges each athlete to complete as many pull-ups (1-point) and muscle-ups (3 points) as possible in 2-minutes. A successful pull-up requires athletes to lock their arms at the bottom and ensure their chin clears the bar at the top without moving their lower body before initiating each pull-up. A valid muscle up requires athletes to lock their arms while hanging from the bar; lift themselves up and over the bar and then lock their arms again at the top. Only muscle-ups that are completed without erratic leg movements or benefit of swinging momentum will be considered correct and awarded points by a referee. The final two Man-Up athletes will compete on the infield of the MCU Brooklyn Cyclone’s Stadium in front of a sold out crowd. In addition, all athletes will perform an exciting Freestyle Calisthenics demonstration that is sure to thrill the 8000 Brooklyn Cyclone fans in attendance.
