Yashua Klos: Banners @ISE Cultural Foundation

During the mid-twentieth century, woodblock printing was, for many African American artists, an activist as well as artistic process. Printing multiples allowed for the work to be circulated outside of an exclusive art market. These artists believed that their work would best function where it was most useful - amongst the people. In this !Banners' series, the viewer's vantage point looks downward upon the subject, while the scale of the figures challenge any pedestrian interaction with the image. Portraiture, in this case, becomes an act of representation where the image itself operates as propaganda
